The picture above represents a transistor not a diode. Normal diodes do not have that breakdown region like the picture above unless your talking about a zenor diode which does operate in the breakdown region and is sometimes used as a regulator.Now if your talking about a bridge rectifier two diodes are on for the first half cycle and 2 are blocking. then the other two are on for the negative half cycle and the other two are blocking.
