Initially, pressure will rise at the discharge but the pressure difference between the discharge and suction will decrease eventually. So, the pump will stop suctioning and the impeller will keep on rotating the same liquid that was inside it. The result is that the pump will not be negatively affected.

Closed valve condition itself impacting back pressure on impeller vanes & overall rotary parts 

 

Impeller mounting shaft area has risk for bending & resulting in run out

 

Heating on volute can be observed.

Seal stuffing box pressure can be increase
